When is tachograph legalization mandatory?

A legalized tachograph should be installed in buses and trucks with a maximum permissible weight exceeding 3.5 tons, intended for commercial transport of goods or people. The tachograph must be inspected every 2 years. Calibration should be performed if the clock showing the UTC time is behind or ahead by more than 20 minutes. This is because the time shift of the device affects the results of its measurements. Recalibration is also necessary when buying a vehicle from a lease or when changing tire sizes.

What are the risks of not legalizing a tachograph?

Failure to meet the date of legalization of the tachograph renders its measurements invalid. Should this be the case, the police control will end with a fine. Drivers using a vehicle equipped with a tachograph without legalization risk a fine of PLN 200. A fine of PLN 2,000 is given to the person managing transport in the company, as they are is responsible for the fleet and ensuring the legalization of tachographs. The company to which the vehicle belongs is also charged with a fine of PLN 1,000.

New generation of digital tachographs DTCO 4.0

According to the current regulations, all vehicles registered after 15 June 2019 must be equipped with the fourth generation DTCO 4.0 tachograph.

This type of tachograph allows control officers to remotely access the indications of the device, without having to stop the vehicle.

The smart tachographs automatically record the location of the vehicle using GPS. They record the place where a driver`s work starts, check driving parameters every three hours and finally note where work ends and a driver`s rest takes place.

The fourth-generation smart tachograph is also able to share its data with other approved vehicle telematics systems, allowing a driver`s working hours to be easily brought into fleet telematics systems.

The operator with on-line insight into the truck device is able to realistically determine the driver’s working and driving time. Remote data reading is a certain facilitation for the inspection officers, but the main benefit is for the driver, who does not have to waste time on a stop related to routine control.
